Scherzo

This year I had the enormous pleasure of working through the Rosiak 'Scherzo' with 'Flutter' (students from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and University of Queensland School of Music), who ultimately won 2nd prize at the Australian Flute Ensemble Competition in Adelaide.  'Scherzo' was chosen as a set work at that competition.

'Scherzo' is a virtuosic, energetic piece, which is equally thrilling for audiences to hear, as it is for the performers to play.  In fact, 'Flutter' performed 'Scherzo' in two other important competitions (Queensland Woodwind and Brass Competition; 4MBS Chamber Music Prize), winning first place at both, so it proved to be hugely successful as an own choice work in that context.  'Scherzo' exploits a range of textures and moods, with its driving rhythmic passages, to more ethereal, atmospheric, and tender moments.  Rosiak has provided moments for soloists within the group to shine, but also crisp, high energy, syncopated passages for the whole ensemble.

I very much look forward to hearing more of Michal Rosiak's flute compositions.  They will certainly be a welcome addition to the international flute repertoire.
